Utility Company, Duke Energy,

Announces Net Metering Changes To North Carolina

What is Happening to Duke Energy Solar Customers on July 1st?

Starting  July 1st, 2022, Duke Energy will replace its  net metering program with a new program called the Distributed Energy Resources (DER) tariff. Under this new program, customers with rooftop solar systems will be compensated for the excess energy they generate and send back to the grid at a lower rate than what they pay for electricity they consume from the grid.

Customers will also be required to pay an additional monthly fee, which will be based on the size of their solar system and the amount of energy they consume from the grid. The new program is expected to impact the savings of rooftop solar customers in North Carolina and has been the subject of much discussion and debate in the state’s energy industry.

How Can You Take Advantage of Duke’s New Net Metering Changes with Energy Storage?

As a solar homeowner in North Carolina, you can take advantage of the new net metering changes by incorporating energy storage into your solar system. By adding energy storage, you can store excess solar energy generated during the day and use it at night or during periods of high energy consumption when the sun is not shining.

With the new DER tariff, Duke Energy will compensate solar customers for the excess energy they generate at a lower rate than what they pay for electricity they consume from the grid. By using energy storage, you can minimize the amount of excess solar energy you send back to the grid and increase the amount of solar energy you consume on-site. This will reduce the amount of electricity you need to purchase from the grid, which in turn will reduce your overall energy costs and improve your return on investment.

In addition, with energy storage, you can also potentially participate in Duke Energy’s demand response programs, which provide incentives for customers to reduce their energy consumption during periods of high energy demand. By reducing your energy consumption during these periods, you can earn additional incentives and further reduce your energy costs.

Overall, incorporating energy storage into your solar system can help you maximize the benefits of the new net metering changes and provide you with greater energy independence and cost savings.
