Solar for Your Farm
Have you ever considered converting to solar for your farm? Farms of all shapes and sizes are investing in their future by installing solar panels. Solar power is affordable, environmentally friendly, and can set your farm up for decades by reducing utility expenses.
If you operate a farm in the Carolinas, you may be able to apply for a grant or a loan guarantee from the USDA. These incentives exist to help businesses like farms install renewable energy or make energy efficiency retrofits to reduce electricity and fuel costs.
This initiative was established to contribute to American energy independence and to help growers and animal agriculture businesses build wealth while stimulating economic activity in rural areas. Such investments can also reduce energy costs for commercial customers in rural areas over time.
Benefits of Going Solar for Your Farm
Solar energy is a ‘natural’ fit for farms with so much open ground and roof space.
- Improves cash flow by lowering the cost of operations.
- Right now, the switch is supported by significant government incentives:
- Federal 26% Investment Tax Credit (ITC) – turns tax liability into a capital investment.
- Federal five-year MACRS depreciation
- Competitive annual USDA REAP Grants (funding up to 25% of project cost).
- Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC) cash payments available in Illinois.
- Energy independence from solar for your farm by stabilizing the electricity rate.
- An investment that helps keep the farm in the family for the next generation.
Your Farm will benefit from Agricultural Solar
Program details such as eligibility information can be found on the USDA Rural Development website. For example, a farm with at least 50% of gross income coming from agricultural operations, owing no delinquent outstanding federal tax balance, will likely qualify for funds. We’d like to connect you with assistance getting your grant application together – please expect processing to take a matter of 4-7 months before you hear back from the agency about whether you’ll be able to receive a grant. We encourage you to contact us by July 2018 to submit this year!
Renewable energy grants under this program are a minimum $2,500 and a maximum $250,000, representing up to 25% of total eligible project costs. Grants can be combined with loan guarantee funding up to 75% of total eligible project costs.
