Solar for Architects
Solar incorporated into building design has become increasingly common as governments, businesses, and homeowners are attempting to decrease their carbon footprints by converting to sources of clean, renewable energy. Solar powered systems are changing our landscapes on a global scale as we move away from burning fossil fuels in an effort to reverse and prevent any further environmental damage.
Including solar systems in architectural projects comes down to more than just throwing some panels on the roof — architects are tasked with incorporating them into structures in a way that’s both efficient and aesthetically pleasing. This includes using their expertise to determine where the panels will receive maximum sun exposure while keeping in mind the look and feel of the building.
Why Solar for Architects is Changing the Game
The architectural field and the solar industry are a natural fit; green architecture and sustainable design have already altered our buildings and continue to grow with new development. Many architects are educating themselves on the basics of solar design, and incorporating solar systems into innovative solutions for both residential and commercial structures.
Solar for architects is also attractive because it allows the architect to make a mark on the clean energy movement as it relates to building new structures with their communities in mind. Many cities and towns across the country understand the importance of renewable energy sources and have committed to keeping their environment as clean as possible by not only encouraging the installation of solar panels, but in some cases requiring them.
With more and more places beginning to insist on the inclusion of solar panels on newly constructed projects, solar knowledge is quickly becoming a necessity for architects. For example, in California, starting in 2020, all newly built homes must include solar panels, as per a statewide mandate in the pursuit of phasing out fossil fuels altogether.
Commercial Solar Tax Incentives
For businesses operating in the Carolinas, there is a commercial solar tax incentive that so many customers have already taken advantage of!
The solar investment tax credit (ITC) allows commercial solar customers to take 26 percent of their solar investment as a credit against their federal tax liability. The ITC applies to the complete costs of commercial solar systems, and there is no cap on its value (though the customer must have a tax liability to benefit from a tax credit).
Please note: at the end of 2020, the ITC goes down to 22% and continues to decrease in the future years.
