Enphase Energy is a global energy technology company headquartered in Fremont, California, best known for pioneering the microinverter approach to residential and commercial solar power. Rather than using a single central string inverter to convert DC power from solar panels into AC power for the home, Enphase places a small microinverter beneath each individual solar panel.
This means each panel operates independently. If one panel is shaded or underperforming, it does not drag down the output of the rest of the system. As of 2025, Enphase holds approximately 60% market share in U.S. residential solar inverters and has shipped millions of microinverters worldwide.
Enphase currently offers two main residential battery products: (1) the IQ Battery 5P, the newest model featuring six embedded grid-forming microinverters, 5.0 kWh usable energy capacity, 3.84 kW continuous power output, and peak output of 7.68 kW for 3 seconds. It supports backup, self-consumption, and time-of-use modes. (2) the IQ Battery 10, comprising three base IQ Battery 3 storage units with a total of 10.08 kWh usable energy, twelve embedded microinverters, and 3.84 kW continuous power.
Both models use the same IQ8 Series microinverter technology and are backed by a 15-year limited warranty. The modular design allows adding more battery units over time without disrupting the existing system.
Sunlight Backup is a feature unique to Enphase IQ8 Series microinverters that allows your solar panels to produce a limited amount of power during a grid outage, even without a battery. When the grid goes down, the IQ8 microinverters can form a temporary microgrid and provide power directly to designated loads (typically a few essential circuits).
The power output is limited and variable depending on sunlight conditions, and it only works during daylight hours. For full whole-home backup with nighttime coverage, Enphase recommends pairing IQ8 microinverters with IQ Batteries and an IQ System Controller. Sunlight Backup requires an IQ System Controller 2 or 3 and proper configuration during installation.
PowerMatch is a software technology introduced by Enphase in late 2025 that intelligently adjusts IQ Battery 5P output to match a home's real-time power needs. Unlike hybrid inverter systems that push all power through a single large inverter, the IQ Battery 5P uses six embedded microinverters that can scale output dynamically.
PowerMatch activates only the microinverters needed at any given moment, reducing low-load efficiency losses that occur when a large inverter operates at a fraction of its capacity. This results in more usable energy from each charge cycle, longer battery life, and greater long-term savings. PowerMatch was initially launched in Europe for grid-tied IQ Battery 5P systems and is delivered as a free over-the-air software update. Grid-agnostic support and availability in additional regions was expected in January 2026. The Enphase App now shows PowerMatch status on the Status and Settings pages, and homeowners can enable or disable it from the app.
Installers and homeowners should be aware of several important IQ Battery 5P installation considerations:
(1) Always bring IQ Battery 5P handles to each job (Part Number: IQBATTERY-HNDL-5), the unit weighs 78.9 kg (174 lbs) including the cover and wall-mount bracket.
(2) Use copper conductors to connect to terminals in the IQ System Controller or battery, aluminum is not recommended.
(3) Always land battery and PV circuits on the bottom lugs in the IQ System Controller, not directly on the breakers.
(4) Enphase recommends a wired Ethernet connection for the IQ Gateway rather than Wi-Fi, especially for battery systems, to ensure reliable communication.
(5) Enphase University certification is required to commission the IQ Battery 5P. Homeowners cannot self-install or commission.
(6) The 5 kWh capacity per unit means most homes will need multiple batteries stacked together for meaningful backup; plan wall space accordingly.
(7) The IQ Battery 5P is backed by a 15-year limited warranty covering up to 6,000 cycles.
The IQ Meter Collar is a newer Enphase product that eliminates the need for a backup sub-panel by integrating microgrid interconnection device (MID) functionality directly at the meter. This substantially reduces installation complexity and cost for battery backup systems because installers no longer need to rewire critical circuits into a dedicated backup sub-panel. The IQ Meter Collar has received approval from utilities including SDG&E, with broader utility approvals expected to follow. It represents a significant simplification of the Enphase backup installation process.
A microinverter is a small power electronics device (roughly the size of a paperback book) that attaches directly beneath a single solar panel. It converts the DC electricity produced by that one panel into AC electricity on the spot. In contrast, a string inverter is a single, larger box (usually wall-mounted in a garage or on the side of the house) that converts DC power from an entire string of panels at once.
The key advantage of microinverters is panel-level independence: shading, soiling, or a fault on one panel does not reduce the output of the others. Microinverters also enable panel-level monitoring so homeowners can see exactly how each panel is performing. The trade-off is that microinverters typically cost more upfront than a string inverter system.
The primary benefits include:
(1) no single point of failure, if one microinverter fails, the rest of the system continues producing;
(2) panel-level optimization and monitoring via the Enphase App;
(3) superior performance in partial-shade conditions;
(4) easier system expansion (just add more panels with microinverters);
(5) Sunlight Backup capability with IQ8 Series (limited solar power during grid outages without a battery);
(6) built-in rapid shutdown compliance with NEC codes; and
(7) a 25-year limited warranty. Installers also report that Enphase systems are generally easier to design and install compared to string inverter systems with optimizers.
Enphase microinverters are widely regarded as among the most reliable inverter products on the market. According to a study by a reliability engineering firm that also tests for Boeing and the U.S. Military, the Enphase microinverter has a mean time between failures (MTBF) greater than 300 years. If infant mortality (early failure) occurs, it typically happens within two to three weeks of installation.
Enphase reports that approximately 85% of communication errors reported in regions like New England following winter storms are caused by physical obstructions (snow or ice) rather than actual hardware failure.
However, some installers and a law firm (Migliaccio & Rathod LLP) have reported elevated failure rates of 10–20% within the first two years specifically for IQ8 microinverters paired with high-wattage (400W+) panels, attributed to possible over-current stress. As of March 2026, Enphase has not issued an official recall, and this investigation is ongoing. Homeowners experiencing failures should contact their installer for warranty replacement.
The IQ8 Series includes five main residential models, each designed for different panel wattages: IQ8, 245 VA peak output, compatible with panels 235–350W. Entry-level model for smaller or older panels. IQ8+, 300 VA peak output, compatible with panels 235–440W. Good budget option for 300–350W panels. IQ8M, 330 VA peak output, compatible with panels 235–460W. Mid-range option for 370–420W panels. IQ8A, 366 VA peak output, compatible with panels 295–500W. Ideal for shade-heavy roofs with 400–460W panels. IQ8H (IQ8HC), 384 VA peak output, compatible with panels 320–540+W.
Best choice for most modern residential installations with high-wattage panels (up to 540W), achieving 97.3% CEC efficiency. All IQ8 models feature Enphase's grid-forming microinverter technology, which enables Sunlight Backup (limited solar power during grid outages, even without a battery) and Burst Mode (temporarily exceeding rated output during peak sun conditions).
The IQ9N-3P is Enphase's newest commercial microinverter, which began shipping in the United States in late December 2025. It is Enphase's first microinverter powered by gallium nitride (GaN) technology rather than traditional silicon, enabling higher performance and an industry-leading efficiency of up to 97.5%.
The IQ9N-3P is designed for three-phase 480Y/277V commercial installations. It is not currently available as a residential product. It is manufactured in the United States to support domestic content requirements and FEOC compliance for eligible commercial solar projects. Enphase has not yet announced a residential IQ9 variant, so the IQ8 Series remains the current residential lineup.
The IQ System Controller 3 (IQSC3) is a microgrid interconnection device (MID) that serves as the central hub for Enphase battery backup systems. It automatically detects grid outages and seamlessly transitions your home from grid power to backup power.
The controller connects the home to grid power, the IQ Battery system, and solar PV, and includes a built-in rapid shutdown switch. Key features include: a single-enclosure design that consolidates interconnection equipment, mounting on a single stud with bottom/left/right conduit entry options, color-coded wires for easy installation, and integrated hold-down functionality that eliminates the need for separate hold-down kits and special breakers. It supports up to 40 kWh of IQ Battery 5P storage (without a Power Control System) and up to 80 kWh with a PCS. The IQ System Controller 3 is backed by a 10-year limited warranty. Note: Enphase University certification is required to commission this device.
The IQ Gateway (previously called the Envoy) is the communication hub of every Enphase system. It is a small device typically installed near the main electrical panel that communicates with all the microinverters via power-line communication (PLC) over the existing AC wiring.
It collects production data from each microinverter, relays it to the Enphase cloud (Enlighten) via your home WiFi or cellular connection, and receives firmware updates from Enphase. The IQ Gateway is also responsible for system commissioning and is required for monitoring, troubleshooting, and warranty support.
